‘With the Fans, For the Fans’
1
With a difficult season now finished and relegation confirmed, it marks the end of what has been another turbulent year on the pitch. That’s three relegations and two promotions in the past five seasons, underlining just how challenging it has been to find stability recently.
The next appointment as manager will be crucial in an increasingly competitive Championship and questions over the financial situation at the club.
We will be going out to members shortly to gather views and reflect properly on the season just gone. For now, we wanted to share some key updates from BFCISA as we head into the summer and begin preparing for the season ahead.
Please feel free to reply directly to this email with your thoughts, experiences, or issues as your input directly shapes our work.

In Brief – This month:
We reflect on a successful member’s event Understanding Burnley’s Finances with Kieran Maguire, encourage members to track their loyalty points and introduce our Disabled Supporters Representative.
In Brief – Last month
The BFCISA committee formally met for the first time and agreed Officer roles, we marked one year since our launch, and congratulated Burnley FC Women on their promotion and thanked Scott Parker for his time at the club.

Understanding Burnley’s Finances with Kieran Maguire:
On Thursday 21st May the ISA hosted an evening where football finance expert, Kieran Maguire, provided an in-depth analysis of our fiscal standing, whilst also fielding questions from the 60 or so attendees.
Kieran is the leading expert in his field, a professor at the University of Liverpool, his insight regularly sought by major broadcasters whilst hosting the highly respected “Price of Football” podcast. It was against this backdrop that it was a considerable privilege to secure Kieran for the evening.
Kieran who despite his academic status and obvious charisma is a man of humility. He selflessly declined a fee to appear, instead asking for donations to the Samaritans Charity, which currently stand at over £600.
Thanks to all who submitted questions and contributed to a fascinating discussion. Particular thanks should go to Alister Leaver of the Committee who was instrumental in the event taking place.
On the 23rd May an email containing a link to a recording of the event was sent out to members. Please use this as an opportunity to view the event if you were not able to originally attend or as reference to the real challenges our club now faces. Challenges outlined by not only an expert, an independent one at that.
Some of Kieran’s analysis in bullet point for. They make for stark, even chilling reading;
.
  • Burnley is the second most profitable club in Premier League history, although this is largely based on pre-ALK ownership.
  • Burnley’s total revenue as a PL club is normally in the bottom 3 or 4.
  • Burnley were traditionally a good model at keeping wages manageable. In 2015 for every £100 of revenue, £37 was allocated to wages, that figure has increased to £115 (for every £100 of revenue) by 2025.
  • Burnley’s losses are dramatically increasing year on year. One illustration; 2017 a £26m profit, down to a £74m loss by 2025.
  • Between 2017-2020 the club’s borrowings were zero. By 2025 they were £142m.
  • There appears to be no short-term financial pressure on the club, but real uncertainty if we are not promoted within 2 years and parachute payments have ended.
Despite the “day job” Kieran repeatedly demonstrated that he is a football fan first. On his beloved Brighton and Hove Albion; “It’s the most important thing in my life that’s not my family.” Many will readily empathise with that sentiment.

Disabled Supporters Representative:
Following the AGM in March, Chris Johnson joined the committee as Disabled Supporters Representative and has already begun successfully supporting members through individual casework and wider advocacy.
Chris brings significant experience in this area, having contributed in an advisory capacity to the development of the club’s disabled facilities and as well serving on the board of Level Playing Field, a national charity representing disabled fans.
As a disabled season ticket holder himself, he offers both professional and lived insight into supporter needs.
Members who would like support, advice and guidance or even representation with the club are encouraged to get in touch via memberships@burnleyfcisa.com.

Loyalty Points:
A reminder for members to check that their Loyalty Points account reflects all matches attended during the 2025/26 season.
It’s also worth recording your end-of-season total (for example via a screenshot), so that when renewal points are added, you can verify the total and raise any discrepancies with the club if needed.
We are aware of past issues where points totals have not aligned, and these can be difficult to resolve without evidence.

Away Match Experiences:
Thank you to all members who have shared feedback on away matchday experiences this season. Submissions have been compiled after each fixture and passed on to the relevant Supporter Liaison Officers to keep fan voice at the centre of decisions made about us.
A recurring issue raised this season relates to ticket access in away ends, particularly concerns around membership schemes and the potential for tickets to be used by non-Burnley supporters or resold through unofficial channels.
This is an area we will continue to monitor and represent members on. We would encourage anyone experiencing or observing these issues to continue reporting to us.

If you have friends, family, colleagues or fellow Clarets that may be interested, continue to spread the word and get them to sign up through the following link – https://membermojo.co.uk/burnleyfcisa
As always, BFCISA is volunteer-led and open to anyone who’d like to help. If you’re interested in lending your skills in any way, please get in touch, especially if you can help us broaden the perspectives we represent.
Up the Clarets!
